MEET THE FIRE CHIEF

Fire Chief Todd St. Cyr

With the recent announcement of the discontinuation of the Volunteer Fire Department, we thought it would be a good time to chat with Harahan Fire Chief, Todd St. Cyr.  Harahan began with only a volunteer department, but as demands increased, it was necessary to have a full-time department. Chief St. Cyr has made many, many improvements, not the least of which is raising our Rating to Class II. Our department has 14 full-time employees and one part-time fire-fighter.
We have two front line pumpers, a rescue squad, and a reserve engine. One of our engines was designed by Chief St. Cyr and constructed to his specifications so that it could fit into the residential neighborhoods of Harahan with no difficulty.  Physical fitness is a major priority in firefighting. Because of Harahan's desire to maintain our conditioning, the Fire Department has a remarkably outfitted fitness center and DAILY training session and drills.

Our Fire Department is the core of our first responders in any emergency. They do not ever evacuate and if relocation is deemed necessary, they maintain a position as close to Harahan as possible.  so when the sirens roar, know that we are all in great hands.

A service charge of $15.00 per annum is levied and collected on all classes and types of residential and commercial real property within the city. All funds collected shall be dedicated exclusively for the purpose of creating a permanent funding source for the city volunteer fire department.  The city council may provide for exemptions to certain classes of real property owners by resolution, which may include classes based on age, income, use and physical characteristics of property.

It is  unlawful for any person to furnish, sell, offer for sale or display for sale any fireworks within the city. Fireworks include firecrackers, torpedoes, Roman candles, toy cannons, detonating canes, blank cartridges, sky rockets or other pyrotechnic displays, but shall not include or apply to ammunition of firearms nor to dynamite. However, a change in this law is under advisement at this time.

The National Fire Code is the Fire Code for the City of Harahan.
City Ordinance for funding and fire prevention
